Welcome to the ETF Research blog!

This blog will chart the progress of an ETF-sponsored research project conducted by Worcester College of Technology, Worcestershire County Council and Kirklees College. The ETF have asked for research to be performed and recommendations to be made on strategies to improve the quality of initial teacher training for teachers in the education and skills sector. The partnership's successful bid centres on an investigation into the views of newly-qualified and soon-to-qualify practitioners in FE and those of the ILT and quality managers in their organisations.

The research will seek to establish current areas of good practice and shortfalls in ILT-related aspects of ITE. It will centre upon the rigour and quality of initial ILT skills diagnostics, on-going developmental action planning, tracking of distance travelled and exit action plan for future development. The focus will fall upon the coverage of underlying pedagogy of e-learning, the range of ILT covered in the ITE curriculum, suitability of chosen ILT tools for diverse delivery scenarios, differentiation, learner inclusion and the ability of practitioners to apply the ILT to their individual delivery scenarios.

The team will be using this blog to report on the progress of the research and to invite comments and discussion on the issues covered from those involved in the research and also from interested practitioners and stakeholders. We look forward to debating the issues and findings with you!

Lots of ILT in the news this week. The new FELTAG report says that 50% of the content in all publicly funded FE courses should be delivered online by 2017:
http://feltag.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/FELTAG-REPORT-FINAL.pdf

While the NMC Horizon report on HE asserts that it is HE lecturers' lack of IT and ILT skills which is preventing technology uptake, commenting that students are generally more skilled than their teachers when it comes to technology: http://www.nmc.org/news/its-here-horizon-report-2014-higher-education-edition

Lots of interesting talking points and some good introductory content for anyone writing a research report on ILT, I would say?

Great to meet up and chat via Blackboard with Jon and Richard this morning on project inception. We touched base on the FELTAG and NMC Horizon reports and if you've not had chance to read them yet, there's some fascinating content.

FELTAG is critical of current sector workforce capacity for technology use stating that ‘the entire workforce has to be brought up to speed to fully understand the potential of learning technology, needing ‘significant investment in... knowledge, skills and understanding of technology’s potential’. They suggest ’benchmarks for initial teacher education and teachers’ CPD so that their ability to understand and optimise the use of learning technology can be enhanced and refreshed regularly’.

Their hope is that this would allow learners to be engaged and empowered to fully exploit digital technology and redress the ‘under-exploitation of skills, devices and technical knowledge when it came to the use of learning technology’. This move will be incentivised by a mandate fo 10% wholly-online component in every publicly-funded FE programme from 2015/16, increasing to 50% by 2017/2018. I know that was something that made your eyebrows raise this morning, Jon?!

The Horizon report cited ‘low digital fluency of faculty’ as the major ‘solvable’ impediment to technology use in learning, pointing out that many students are more skilled in technology use than their teachers!

FELTAG suggest ‘digital technology-enhanced, learning-specific qualifications’ and informal CPD on technology use so that practitioners will have ‘minimum basic online capabilities and be on a progression path towards more advanced… skills.’ This development will begin during ITE with a mandatory practical module on effective use of digital technology tools for teaching and learning.

It will be interesting to use our research to see what current ITE students and those who have recently graduated think should be in this module!

Hi all, looking forward to chatting with you at the monthly online meeting this Wednesday at 0930. The Blackboard Collaborate link and meeting agenda have been to you via email by Peter. I'll be outlining the progress here to date and we will invite you to let us know what activities you've done so far. I'll be summarising the literature review and the early findings from the ITE students' questionnaire, which is flagging up some really interesting views.

If you have any items you want to add to the agenda under AOB, post a message here and let us know so that we can consider them ahead of time, if possible.I look forward to catching up with you on Wednesday!

It was lovely to catch up with several of the other ETF research teams at LANDEX this week. There's some fascinating work being done which I am sure will have a great impact in the sector. Looking forward to the next meeting to see how everyone is doing!

Thanks for your input at the monthly online meeting on Wednesday, everyone. I look forward to your focus group and 1-1 interview summaries as it sounds as if the discussions have been really valuable.
I did my final focus group with some blended CET students this morning so will be putting a summary of that on the Wiki next week. I found it interesting that so many comments are regarding inclusion issues and motivation when learners are 'left alone to get on with' online learning, as it's often viewed as something totally separate from the practitioners' 'main' pedagogy. The CET group today touched on this, commenting that one of their chief development needs was for input on embedding the online parts of their delivery into their main practice - it was nice to hear some positive views about meeting learner and employer needs by doing more online learning, too!
